Investors looking to buy a stake in OpenAI are making an unprecedented bet that developer ChatGPT will become the world’s dominant artificial intelligence company and be worth a trillion dollars.

OpenAI intends to raise an additional $5 billion or more. Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft – the three most valuable technology companies in the world – are in talks to join the funding round.
Others interested in investing include New York-based Tiger Global and United Arab Emirates-backed fund MGX, multiple sources said. The round is expected to close shortly.
Other top tech investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital — Silicon Valley’s leading venture capitalists and OpenAI’s current backers — are staying out of the round for now, according to people familiar with the matter.
Investors said the deal was highly unusual in its scope and structure. Venture capitalists like Thrive and Tiger typically write much smaller checks to lesser-known startups, hoping to get 10-100 times their money back.
To achieve such a return with OpenAI, the company will need to grow in the coming years and reach a value of at least $1.5 trillion – more than the parent company of Facebook Meta and Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.
Many are convinced that it will be so. “We’re talking about a path to a $1 trillion company,” said a partner at the investment firm that backed OpenAI. “I don’t think that’s unreasonable.”
