OpenAI stated that the reason for terminating the contract was alleged “sex discrimination against a male colleague.”

“Allegations that I discriminated against anyone are completely false,” Beyermeister said in a statement to the WSJ.

The company stressed that she “made valuable contributions during her time at OpenAI” and that her dismissal was “not related to any issues she raised while at the company.”

Her dismissal came on the eve of the planned launch of the mode, which will allow adult users to create erotic content and conduct conversations on adult topics in ChatGPT. The initiative drew criticism from some of the company’s researchers who study the impact of chatbots on people. According to sources, researchers have expressed concern that the sexualization of chatbots could increase people’s unhealthy emotional dependence on AI, which they begin to perceive as a real partner.

Doubts about the launch were also expressed by members of the Advisory Council on Welfare and Artificial Intelligence, urging the company to review the plans.

Before her dismissal, Beiermeister told her colleagues that she was against the new regime and feared its potential negative impact on people. She also emphasized that OpenAI’s child protection mechanisms are not effective enough to reliably isolate teenagers from adult content.

Despite these caveats, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman defended the idea of ”adult” content. He attributed this to the desire to “treat adult users as adults.”

It’s worth noting that OpenAI’s competitor, Elon Musk’s xAI, found that the looser restrictions on sexual content in their Grok chatbot helped increase the number of users.
