On December 23, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of ten holy Cretan martyrs. This holiday is dedicated to the courage and unity of believers who remained faithful to their faith during the brutal persecution of Christians.
On this day, it is customary to pray for stability and strength of spirit, as well as to remember the exploits of the holy martyrs, who became an example of unshakable faith.
On December 23, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of ten martyrs: Theodulus, Saturninus, Euphorus, Gelasius, Eunikianus, Zotycus, Pompey, Agathopus, Basilides and Evarestus. They suffered for their faith in the 3rd century on the island of Crete during the reign of Emperor Decius.
Saints were subjected to cruel tests that lasted a whole month. They were publicly insulted and tortured, forcing them to sacrifice to pagan gods. However, the martyrs supported each other, creating a powerful spiritual support, and unanimously declared their readiness to die for Christ. When they were led to execution, they prayed not for themselves, but for the light of truth to enlighten their persecutors. The perseverance of the Cretan martyrs inspired many who witnessed their death to convert to Christianity.
