“According to preliminary data, on November 24, 2024, near the settlement of Novodarivka, Pologiv district, Zaporizhia region, where active hostilities are ongoing, servicemen of the armed forces of the Russian Federation shot dead five Ukrainian defenders out of six captured,” the message reads.
The OGP noted that the law enforcement officers established a unit of the Russian army, whose servicemen are currently being checked for involvement in this crime. Investigators also received a video recording of the shooting, the prosecutor’s office says.
This week, the OGP already reported on the shooting of Ukrainian prisoners by the Russian army. According to the report, in November, near the village of Petrivka, Pokrovsky District, Donetsk region, the Russian military shot dead five captured servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Last week, it was officially reported about at least two cases of execution by Russian forces of captured Ukrainian soldiers, in particular in the Pokrovsky direction.
The killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a grave international crime.
In October, the then Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Andriy Kostin, called the killing of Ukrainian servicemen in captivity a purposeful policy of the Russian Federation.
Reports of murders, torture and ill-treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war are regularly reported. In general, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have information about the murder of at least 93 Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian soldiers, reported on October 4, the representative of the OGP, Yuriy Belousov.
According to him, 80% of the cases of executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war were recorded in 2024, but the trend began to appear in November 2023, when “there were changes in the attitude of Russian servicemen towards our prisoners of war for the worse.”
The US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said it had observed an increase in the number of executions by the Russian military of Ukrainian prisoners of war, and stressed that Russian commanders likely “connived, encouraged or directly ordered” the executions.
