Details: After the verdict was announced, he was taken to an unknown destination.

As the ombudsman notes, during mass searches on July 7, 2020, seven people were detained in Crimea, six of them were sent to pre-trial detention centers. Oleksandr Sizikov, who completely lost his sight after a road accident, was placed under house arrest.

On September 14, Crimean police officers came to Sizikov’s home and took him to an unknown destination.

Lawyer Lilya Gemedzha called the actions of the police officers illegal, noting that they even threatened to use force against Sizikov and bring him to justice for “disobedience to legal requirements.”

Lubinets emphasizes that according to the resolution of the Russian government, persons with serious diseases, in particular those accompanied by complete blindness, are not subject to detention.

The Ombudsman called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia to demand the immediate release of Oleksandr Sizikov, as well as all illegally detained Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and the Russian Federation.

Direct speech of Lubinets: “The actions of the Russian security forces against persons with disabilities violate fundamental human rights, in particular the right to a fair trial and protection.”

Prehistory: Sizikov, like the other six detainees, was accused of involvement in the Islamic political party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which Russia recognized as a terrorist organization in 2003. However, the party operates without restrictions on the territory of Ukraine and most countries of the world.

The persecution of this organization in Crimea began after the occupation of the peninsula by Russia in 2014. Members of Hizb ut-Tahrir are accused of terrorism, although human rights activists insist that the organization has nothing to do with violent actions and is only engaged in the fight against political repression and expresses disagreement with the policy of the Russian authorities in Crimea.
