In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Avellon stated that Obsidian has plans for DLC for the second installment of The Outer Worlds, but that sequels to the franchise have not been discussed yet.
It’s important to remember that Avellon left the studio 10 years ago due to a conflict with its head Fergus Urquhart, but apparently he still has sources inside the company.
Avowed was released on February 18, 2025 and became a rather iconic project for Obsidian, at least in terms of the combat system. The game received very moderate reviews from critics and players, but fans of the studio did not remain indifferent.
At the same time, The Outer Worlds 2 also performed well. The first part did not gain much popularity, but the sequel entered the top 10 most popular paid games on Steam upon release.
If Obsidian really isn’t planning a sequel to The Outer Worlds, it could pave the way for other projects, such as a new game in the Pillars of Eternity universe or even a project in the Fallout universe.
For example, the head writer of Fallout: New Vegas recently returned to Obsidian, and previously the art director of the studio hinted that they “may” be working on a new game in the Fallout series.
We previously reported that the developer of The Outer Worlds was surprised when they were bought by Xbox, while they have a game about corporations. Ironically, in reality, Microsoft did not in any way interfere in the development of the game.
