Details: When North Korean troops began arriving in Russia this fall, some Western officials saw it as a sign that the Kremlin desperately needed more soldiers.
“But U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that the deployment was North Korea’s idea, not Russia’s, although President Vladimir Putin quickly endorsed the idea, U.S. officials say,” the publication said.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sent at least 10,000 troops to Russia, according to Ukrainian and Western estimates. The North Koreans mostly joined the Russian units that are conducting a counteroffensive against Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region.
American officials do not believe that Kim received anything immediate from Russia in return for the “help” of the troops.
Instead, they said, the North Korean leader appears to be hoping that Russia will repay him in the future by offering support in the diplomatic struggle, help in the event of a crisis and the provision of technology.
US officials have said it is important for Russia to win the support of North Korea and Iran, which provided it with military aid during the war. This allowed Russia to maintain intensive artillery fire on the front line and to put pressure on Ukrainian cities by attacking critical infrastructure facilities with the help of drones.
Recently, the Ukrainian military released photos and videos of Russian and North Korean soldiers killed in the Kursk region after the assaults.
And the Pentagon predicts an increase in losses among the North Korean military, who continue to participate in battles on the territory of the Kursk region.
