According to the Code of Conduct for the European Commission, it is forbidden to make writing notes during closed meetings discussing defense and security issues.
These rules were imposed in response to fears about possible espionage and accidental transmission of information to enemy states such as Russia.
“The notes were immediately confiscated. After careful consideration of the facts, the commission took appropriate measures to prevent the repetition of such an incident. In this particular case, it was decided that the services of this translator would no longer be used in the future,” the statement reads.
According to Le Monde, which was the first to report the incident, the translator was a freelancer, who was involved in assisting EU leaders in communication with Zelensky.
In recent years, a number of accusations of espionage have been investigating in the EU. Last year, the European Commission staff warned of a “real” threat from foreign agents.
Last year, the European Parliament applied for the former Latvian MEP Tatiana Zhdanoka after suspicion that she worked for the Federal Security Service of Russia.
