No controlled studies support the claim that a carnivore diet can solve health problems. This diet lacks many nutrients, including fiber and antioxidants, and can be dangerous for some people.

A carnivore diet is a strict diet that includes only meat, fish, eggs, and some dairy products. It excludes fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds. Proponents also recommend avoiding high-lactose dairy products such as milk, opting instead for butter or hard cheeses. This diet is based on the idea that our ancestors ate mostly meat, and high-carbohydrate foods are the cause of modern chronic diseases. Unlike other low-carb diets, such as keto or paleo, the carnivore diet aims to eliminate carbohydrates completely.

Sean Baker, an orthopedist and well-known proponent of the diet, claims it helps fight depression, anxiety, arthritis, diabetes and obesity. However, these claims are not supported by scientific research. In one of the studies promoted by Sean Baker, carnivore dieters were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their eating habits and health status. Respondents reported satisfaction with the diet and its positive effects.

However, nutrition experts have expressed concern about the validity of these claims. The study lacked mechanisms to verify information provided by respondents, which casts doubt on its results. Therefore, the findings should be interpreted with caution. Additionally, in 2017, the New Mexico Board of Medicine revoked Baker’s medical license due to concerns about his professional competence. In 2019, the license was restored, but under the condition of medical practice under direct supervision.

What supporters of a meat diet do not eat

A carnivore diet excludes all foods that do not come from animals:

  • Vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds.
  • Dairy products with a high lactose content.
  • Alcohol, tea, coffee, fruit juices.

Is a meat diet good for health?

High-protein diets can promote weight loss by reducing appetite and increasing metabolism. However, such results are usually achieved in the short term. This is because protein, like fat, creates a feeling of fullness after a meal, which can reduce the number of calories consumed. In addition, protein is able to speed up metabolism, helping to burn more calories.

Following a carnivore diet can help reduce caloric intake, especially in the short term. For example, a 3-month study of 132 overweight or obese adults compared four diets with different amounts of protein and carbohydrates. Participants who consumed 0.9-1.3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day lost more weight and fat mass than those who received less protein. However, to achieve similar results, it is not necessary to eliminate all carbohydrates. More studied diets, such as the keto or low-carb diet, also promote weight loss by replacing carbohydrates with foods high in fat or protein. At the same time, the strict restrictions of the carnivorous diet make it difficult to maintain it for a long time.

Harm of a meat diet for health

Due to the limited research on the carnivore diet, its benefits can only be speculated. For example, the diet eliminates carbohydrates, particularly unhealthy foods such as sweets, pastries and sodas, which helps reduce the intake of empty calories. Limiting refined carbohydrates and foods high in sugar can improve blood sugar control, reduce belly fat, and improve blood pressure. However, whether these benefits are long-lasting is currently unknown.

A carnivore diet consisting exclusively of animal products can contain significant amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol. Saturated fats can raise LDL cholesterol, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Although recent studies question the strength of the link between saturated fat intake and the risk of these diseases, consuming large amounts of saturated fat is still a cause for concern. The health consequences of long-term consumption of exclusively animal products remain understudied. Some p processed meat products, such as bacon or sausages, are high in sodium, which can lead to excessive sodium consumption. This also increases the risk of hypertension, kidney disease and other negative health consequences. In addition, frequent consumption of red and processed meat is associated with an increased risk of certain types of cancer, particularly colon and rectal cancer.

A carnivore diet can be particularly problematic for certain populations. For example, those who need to limit their protein intake, including people with chronic kidney disease, should not follow this diet. Also, those who are more sensitive to cholesterol in food, or hypersensitive to cholesterol, should be careful about eating large amounts of foods with a high cholesterol content. In addition, certain population groups with special nutrient needs are likely to be unable to meet them on a carnivore diet. These include children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women. Finally, those with food anxiety or a history of eating disorders should not try this diet.
