“Ultimately, the nuclear weapons system, which is necessary to preserve the North Korean regime, will turn into a weapon capable of threatening the entire world, including the United States,” Lee is convinced.
As the president of South Korea noted, “even now, enough materials are being created to produce 10 to 20 nuclear weapons per year.”
Since taking office last year, Lee Jae-myung has repeatedly made efforts to resume talks with North Korea and soften the frozen relationship, but Kim Jong-un’s regime has rejected these initiatives, calling South Korea its biggest enemy.

Last year, the North Korean leader demonstrated his latest Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile, which is designed to attack the US mainland. In this way, Kim Jong-un signaled his determination to expand and modernize his nuclear arsenal.
Although the North Korean leader has expressed his willingness to meet again with US President Donald Trump (they met three times during Trump’s first presidency), Kim maintains that Washington must drop demands for nuclear disarmament as a prerequisite for any talks.
At the same time, Lee Jae-myung believes that Trump can play a key role in restoring diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula.
