Introducing the first 3D-printed Nike Air Max sneaker / photo by NikeNike is embracing modern technology by teaming up with 3D footwear specialist Zellerfeld to release the Air Max 1000, its first fully 3D printed sneaker. The Verge writes about it.The Air Max 1000 design is an updated version of the iconic Air Max 1. They debuted in 1987 as Nike’s first sneaker with an air cushion in the heel area. This element is also retained in the Air Max 1000, and although the air cushion itself is not 3D printed, the rest of the sneaker is made from the same flexible material.
According to Nike, thanks to 3D printing, they were able to realize a unique contoured design that would not have been possible using traditional footwear manufacturing technologies. The Nike Air Max 1000 sneaker is fitted to the size of the foot using a scanner before 3D printing, so it will fit the wearer exactly.
Nike has not announced when the sneakers will go on sale or how much they will cost. For reference, the 3D-printed shoes available on Zellerfeld’s website range from $159 for sandals to nearly $400 for sneakers.
