“In carrying out its interim chairmanship of BRICS, the government of Brazil announces… the official acceptance of Nigeria as a partner country of the association. The government of Brazil welcomes the decision of the government of Nigeria,” the message reads.
As noted, Nigeria becomes the ninth BRICS partner country, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
“Having the sixth largest population in the world – and the largest in Africa – as well as being one of the continent’s largest economies, Nigeria shares common interests with other BRICS members. It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance – issues , which are the main priorities during the current presidency of Brazil,” the message said.
