NASA launched a race for Mars Internet Creation

Yevgeny Demkivsky Author of news Mezha.media and GIK. I write about technologies, cinema and games. Perhaps about games with a little more passion.

NASA changes the approach to interplanetary communication: instead of creating and maintaining its own orbital repeaters, the agency plans to buy communication services as a service. This decision has already launched real races among large space players for the right to create a “backbone” between land and Mars. Techcrunch writes about it.

The transmission of information from Mars is now transmitted through devices like Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Maven, which relay data from marries and planting devices to the Deep Space Network (DSN) ground antennas. Although these orbital devices are still able to work, they have not been designed for permanent work and will eventually fail.

NASA plans to update outdated infrastructure, combining its own resources with commercial systems. In July 2025, the agency announced a competition for proposals for the study of architectures, which will provide a continuous link between the Earth and the moon, as well as the channel from the surface of Mars to the Centers of Management on Earth.

Among the companies that have already presented their concepts are Blue Origin with the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter on the Blue Ring platform, Rocket Lab with its Martian orbiting telecommunications system, as well as SpaceX, which plans to use Starlink technologies for interplanetary.

The main goal is to create an infrastructure that will allow you to move from scientific missions to the constant presence of a person on the moon and Mars.
