One of the leading trainers in world tennis suggested a single explanation why so many sown athletes did not cope with the grass and fly out in the first rounds of Wimbledon 2025. In his Instagram, Naomi Osaki coach explained why there were so many unexpected results at the British Maido.
Patrick Muratoglu believes that a short pause between Rolan Garros and Wimbledon leads to sensations
“The only explanation that makes sense is the lack of time between the two Grand Helmet tournaments. Top players who go far from Rolan Garros do not play in the first week of the herbal season. They are just starting to train, a maximum of half a week. They need to relax – the big helmet tournament is exhausted. Especially on soil. Three weeks are definitely not enough.
This happens systematically – there are many surprises on Wimbledon, the tops lose in the first rounds. Yes, this year it is especially noticeable, but it is not something new. There is no such helmets. Of course, there are always one or two favorites that lose, but so much in the first round is madness. ”
Why is it difficult to switch from soil to grass
“Players spend too little time on the grass. It’s not a cover that they really understand well. You spend two months on the soil, three weeks on the grass. It takes time to master the coating. Everything is completely different.
There is a high border on the soil, you can slide. The grass is low, sometimes very low, especially if the opponent plays flat or cuts. The ball is accelerated after the rebound. It is impossible to slide – you need to take a lot of small steps. The feed plays a huge role. And there is almost no time for adaptation. Therefore, those who are naturally suitable for the game style win. ”
Psychological fatigue
“There is also a mental component. The helmet is exhausting. When you went far, you are completely devastated. It is necessary to recharge, to re-adjust for a new goal-and it is about to start.
You feel the pressure – you need to show the maximum immediately, because it is a tournament of a great helmet. ”
Complex calendar
“All year long is strange. One helmet in January and then three – from June to August. This is a crazy concentration.
You can think – maybe Rolan Harros to move earlier? But it is cold in Paris. Impossible. Wimbledon move? Then you will have to shift the US Open, and in September in New York is also cold and more rains. So it is also impossible.
These three tournaments are held in the summer only because of the weather – and you do nothing. ”
Therefore, as Muratoglu sums up, the calendar is unlikely to change-and we will continue to see the top players fly out every year at Wimbledon at the beginning.
