Musetti explained why he pulled out of the Aus Open quarterfinals against Djokovic

Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti held a press conference after his 2026 Australian Open quarter-final match against Novak Djokovic, in which he led 2-0 in sets and withdrew due to a hip injury:

– Bad luck, Lorenzo. When did you feel that something was wrong, and what did the doctors say?

– Well, yes. I felt it early in the second set. I felt something strange in my right leg. I continued to play because I was playing really, really well, but I felt that the pain was getting worse and the problem was not going away. And when the medical timeout was called and I sat for three minutes and then started playing again, I felt even worse and the pain level just kept getting higher and higher. So there is nothing special to say.

– In recent years, you have had several injuries, and you have appeared several times at Grand Slam tournaments. How bothersome is it at all and is there an understanding of why this is happening?

– No. We did all the examinations and tests before the start of the season to try to prevent such injuries and, let’s just say, nothing was found. So I honestly have no words to describe how I feel right now and how difficult this injury is for me at the moment.

– Is there an understanding of what exactly was damaged in the leg, and was it possible to do something during the match – fix it, tape it?

– It was impossible to tape because it is too high. I personally feel like I know my body and I’m pretty sure it’s a rip off unfortunately. I’m not a doctor, but it’s somewhere in there – I don’t know if it’s the adductor muscle or something else. Of course, I will go through all the tests when I get home and will definitely inform you.

– You have already had similar difficult moments. Is this the most difficult of them considering how well you played and against whom?

– Yes, of course. To be honest, I could never have imagined the feeling of being 2-0 in sets against Novak, playing like that, controlling the match and having to retire. This is something I could never have imagined. Of course, it hurts a lot.

– Is it similar to trthe avma you got against carlos at roland garros last year or is it different?

– No, it’s the same leg, right, but I don’t feel that it’s in the same place. It’s hard to say right now, because I’ll have to check everything carefully, figure out what exactly it is, and already think about the rehabilitation and recovery process.

– Did you notice that Novak was taking a medical timeout due to calluses around the same time you started having problems?

– No. I saw that he took a medical time out, but I wasn’t worried about him at all.

– How many games or draws did it take before you realized you couldn’t go on anymore?

– Honestly, I played almost the entire second set in this state. I was able to play because the serve helped me a lot and I tried to press a little bit from the backline. I felt the ball well today, so I kind of held on and tried not to pay attention to the pain. But then, as I said in the first question, when I sat down for three minutes and stayed longer in one position, the pain immediately started to increase. Then, especially when I hit my forehand in the open, I felt like I couldn’t get back to the center of the court. After that I couldn’t play normally anymore. Unfortunately, there was no point or opportunity to tape or do anything to continue the match.
