As BR24 writes, the court in Essen announced on Monday the sentences according to which two teenagers received ten years in prison, two more – 8.5 years each. The trial was held entirely behind closed doors.

The publication notes that the court did not find a xenophobic motive in the killing of Ukrainians. It was an “absolutely unprovoked act.” The court said that the young people acted “realizing” that they “didn’t need a reason to kill someone” (previously, the prosecutor’s office suggested that the athletes were attacked because they were Ukrainians).

At the beginning of the trial, the perpetrators were between 14 and 16 years old (two citizens of Syria, a citizen of Germany, as well as a citizen of Germany and Greece).

The intruders attacked the Ukrainians with clubs and knives. The defendants met the Ukrainians in February on a bus heading to Oberhausen Central Station. After getting off the bus at the main station, they surrounded two Ukrainians and beat them, sometimes with batons. After that, they were stabbed in the stomach and chest, as a result of which 17-year-old Volodymyr Ermakov died shortly after the crime. 18-year-old Artem Kozachenko died in hospital from his injuries a few days later.

It is noted that the lawyers of the defendants will file an appeal.

Crimes against Ukrainians abroadAs UNIAN reported, the murder of basketball player Volodymyr Yermakov and his friend Artem Kozachenko is not the only case of a brutal attack on Ukrainian citizens in Germany. After that, it became known that an attack on a Ukrainian teenager took place near Dusseldorf – a stranger made xenophobic remarks, and then hit the 15-year-old boy on the head. In the hospital, it turned out that the teenager had a massive brain injury.

In April, a Russian in Germany killed Ukrainian soldiers who had come to the country for rehabilitation. Ukrainians were stabbed. A 57-year-old citizen of Russia was detained on suspicion of double murder.
