They know about 525 military personnel of the Armed Forces, who were captured in the Kursk region. Until August 25, 2025, judges of the 2nd Western District Military Court were announced under the article “Terrorist Act” against 290 people. Another 15 people were convicted in absentia.
Thus, more than 50% of the well -known Kursk prisoners have already received sentences in Russia, and investigators were calculated. Seven servicemen who participated in the battles in the Kursk region were able to exchange Ukraine. Of the remaining 228 people, four are precisely under investigation, others are not known for sure whether they have been violated against them, or they are refrained as ordinary prisoners of war.
The Ukrainian military entered the Kursk region on August 6, 2024 and held some of its districts for more than half a year. How many Ukrainian servicemen were during this time and during the retreat were captured by Russian military, unknown. At the end of 2024, the Russian State TASS Agency reported 500 captured soldiers of the Armed Forces.
According to the Prescribe of the Investigative Committee of Russia, most often Ukrainian servicemen are accused of “illegally crossing the border”, “blocking the settlement”, “obstruction of evacuation”. Human rights project “Support of political prisoners. Memorial ”notes that prisoners are actually persecuted for service in the Armed Forces and participation in hostilities in the territory of Russia, which violates their right to a fair court, as well as the Geneva Convention.
