Experimental treatment with antibody spray, tested in mice, reduced the effects of head injuries.

Although there are ways to reduce damage caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as long-term rest with concussion or surgery in serious injuries, there are no approved drugs to prevent chronic consequences. One of the first such drugs for TBI can be a nasal antibody -based spray.

Researchers study experimental laboratory antibodies called Foralumab. Foralumab developed by Tiziana Life Sciences aimed at a certain group of proteins that interact with brain immune cells. Antibodies have already proven to be well in some neurological diseases, so scientists have decided to check whether from the TBI could also be useful for TBI.

In their latest study in mice, the results of which were published in Nature Neuroscience, scientists from Mass General described how the drug was introduced through the nose after a strong blow. The results of the experiments demonstrated that fromralumab improves aspects of immediate brain healing after traumatic injury. Compared to the mice in the control group, mice that received from Foralumab within three days after the injury had much better moved and had better coordination.

Research on mice and other animals is only the first step in proving that a new drug or vaccine can work as scientists have hoped. Additional research is required to check the potential of the drug for the treatment of brain injuries. Earlier, Fromumab showed positive results in people’s tests for multiple sclerosis. The tests for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and lateral amyrophic sclerosis have recently begun.
