Details: On December 26, the Parliament of Moldova approved the National Defense Strategy for 2024-2034, the discussion was accompanied by fierce disputes between the ruling party of Maia Sandu and the opposition.

The main threats to the national security of Moldova in the document are those related to the Russian factor – the war in Ukraine and the risks of expanding the war on the territory of Odesa, neighboring Moldova, hybrid attacks by Russia, Russian military and armed formations located in unrecognized Transnistria. These threats are defined as existential threats to the country.

To increase defense capability, it is proposed to increase funding for defense spending, increase the number of military bases, and improve military education.

The goal is to improve Moldova’s position in the Global Firepower ranking from the current penultimate 144th to 134th over the next decade.

The document notes that NATO “plays a decisive role in deterring aggression” under the current geopolitical circumstances.

It is also noted that the neutral status of Moldova is not an obstacle for military cooperation with partner states.

Intensification of Moldova’s participation in EU peacekeeping and civilian missions is envisaged, the document sets the goal of “100% integration into the EU military structures” by 2034.
