The top 64 players on the Players Championship Order of Merit are invited to compete at the Finals in November.
However, Van Gerwen is currently lagging with a 93rd place ranking.
He has pocketed £14,500 on the Players Championship circuit this year.
It means he is £9,000 off the top 64, with just three tournaments remaining.
Yet it appears Van Gerwen has already written off his chances of appearing at Minehead.
