Merz confirmed that citizens who need support will continue to receive it, but the German government intends to introduce stricter rules for applicants.

“People who can work should work,” Merz said.

In addition, it is possible to strengthen the requirements for housing costs: for example, the introduction of the upper limit of rent or checking the living space.

According to the head of the German government, there is a considerable potential for saving, when since 2026 the basic income will be paid instead of assistance to citizens.

“You can save more than one or two billion,” Merz said, adding that “system change” should take place “step by step.”

He added that for “who can work but does not work or work part -time and replenishes in stocks” to perform an undeclared job, “the system is wrong and we have to fix it.”

What was before:

  • As of July 2024, about 266,000 out of 700,000 working -age Ukrainians who came to Germany were employed.
  • Last year, Germany began to talk about reducing refugees from Ukraine.
  • The then Chancellor Olaf Soltz called on hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who found shelter in the country to get a job.
