Details: Commenting on the US national security strategy released last week, Mertz said that some of the things in it can be understood, but some are “unacceptable for us, from a European point of view”.

“I don’t see the need for the Americans to try to save democracy in Europe now. And if it needed to be saved, we would do it ourselves,” he said.
The chancellor said that he was not surprised by the general tone of the document, but he reinforced his opinion that the EU should become more independent from Washington in security and defense matters.
“In my discussions with the Americans, I say: “America first” is fine, but “America alone” cannot be in your interests. You also need partners in this world. One such partner can be Europe. And if Europe is not suitable, then at least make Germany your partner,” Friedrich Merz said.
He also said that US President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation to visit Germany in 2026.
Previously, the head of the Foreign Ministry of Germany rejected “outside advice” the United States concerning Europe in the American national security strategy, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway noted that “something similar was heard from Moscow.”
Commenting on the document, EU chief diplomat Kaya Callas advised the US direct such criticism at Russia.
