According to Selest Wollander, a former high -ranking Pentagon official, the large supplies of weapons that Joe Baiden’s administration has sent or regulated in the last months of her work, should be enough to allow Ukrainians to continue fighting at the present rate until the middle of the year. Some Ukrainian analysts say their country can last longer.
Europe is preparing to try to fill this deficit. In 2024, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Norway jointly provided Ukraine with about $ 25 billion in military assistance – more than the United States that year, according to European officials. The continent has significantly increased the production of artillery shells and discusses the possibility of increasing EU assistance to $ 30 billion this year.
According to President Vladimir Zelensky, since the beginning of a full -scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine, the United States has provided almost $ 70 billion in military assistance. This is more than all other Western allies of Ukraine combined, according to the Roller Institute of World Economy.
But Ukraine also built its own powerful ammunition industry, which now produces weapons for $ 30 billion a year, according to the country’s strategic industry, which is more than a year earlier.
In general, Ukraine is currently building or funding about 55% of its military equipment. According to one Western official, the United States supplies about 20%and Europe is 25%.
But some US supplies-including modern air defense systems, ballistic missiles of the Earth-Earth class, navigation systems and long-range missile artillery-will virtually impossible to replace in the short term. Europe simply does not produce enough – or, in some cases, does not produce at all.
As soon as these US supplies are over, Ukraine’s ability to beat long distances and protect its rear positions will suffer, officials and analysts say.
“To have a partner who supplies the highest quality military technologies to you, by definition, it is indispensable in some areas,” said Tomasz Kopechni, a messenger of the Czech Government on the Restoration of Ukraine.
Former President Joe Biden, before leaving his post, tried to make Ukraine continue to fight for as long as possible. Its administration sent weapons from available US inventories and signed contracts with the US defense industry for the purchase of ammunition, air defense, vehicles and other material means. These deliveries will last until 2026.
“It was in support of what we understood by the new administration’s strategy: to negotiate from the point of view of force and to show Putin that Ukrainians could continue to fight,” Wollander, a former Pentagon employee, who worked as an assistant to the Defense Minister at Biden Administration.
Now Donald Trump turned this assumption, attacking Zelensky in a series of posts on social networks. He accused the Ukrainian president of solving the war and called him a dictator. Both statements echo with the Kremlin’s theses about the Ukrainian leader and the war that began when Russia invaded the country in 2022.
Following Trump’s statements, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson also stated that there is no appetite in the Congress to another bill on assistance to Ukraine.
