Among them are projects for the extraction of rare earth minerals, as well as hydropower and other initiatives. At the same time, according to the interlocutors, these projects are probably not yet advanced enough to satisfy Trump’s desire to quickly obtain significant results.
More ambitious ideas for Greenland’s political rapprochement with the US have not progressed due to a lukewarm attitude towards them from the island’s government and Denmark, the sources said.
Among other ideas that the White House was considering was the conclusion of a Free Association Agreement modeled after the US agreements with the Pacific island states, the interlocutors said. However, this would probably require Denmark to relinquish control over the territory.
The use of force to seize Greenland is not being seriously considered, the sources said.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said Wednesday that the option to buy the island also remains on the table.
