The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga met with the new de facto leader of Syria Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus, Reuters reports with reference to the Syrian state news agency SANA. Al-Arabiya TV channel also informs about this.

According to the agency, Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, and Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani are meeting with the Ukrainian delegation in Damascus on December 30.

Details of the meeting are currently unknown. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine did not announce this visit.

On December 23, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced that he had instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to develop contacts with the new Syrian government. He also added that Ukraine will support Syria’s food security.

The day before, Syria’s de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa told Saudi broadcaster Al Arabia in an interview that he wants to maintain relations with Iran and Russia, but insists that any ties should be based on mutual “respect.”

At the beginning of December, the regime of Bashar Assad was overthrown in Syria, and the power passed to the forces of the rebels, led by the Islamist organization “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham”. Assad and his family, who ruled Syria as a dynasty for more than 50 years, were forced to flee to Russia.
