According to the calculations of Mediazona and the Russian service of the BBC, almost 200 citizens or natives of Kazakhstan died in the war with Ukraine.
Until recently, the country’s authorities only warned about criminal liability, the number of cases was limited to dozens per year.
But at the beginning of 2025, after the publication of personal data of possible mercenaries, the situation changed dramatically.
In April and July 2025, the Ukrainian project “I want to live” published a list of 1,200 names of citizens of Kazakhstan who are fighting or have fought against Ukraine on the side of Russia.
As a result, in 2025, a record 709 cases were opened in the country for “Participation” and 28 – for “Employment”.
