The Prime Minister of Italy added that she had already had a run-in with these men and expressed her “joy and satisfaction” that they were free.

She added that the government had been working “every day” to free its citizens for more than 400 days.

Maloney thanked Venezuela’s acting president, Delsea Rodriguez, for the “constructive cooperation” she has shown.

The paper recalls that since the US ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a surprise attack earlier this month, a number of local and foreign prisoners have been released.

Prehistory:

  • On January 9, four Spanish nationals and a prominent Venezuelan-Spanish human rights activist arrived in Madrid – the day after they were released from a Venezuelan prison.
  • Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the United States would take over leadership of Venezuela until a clear and secure transition of power took place there, and admitted that this could take years.
