“Ukrainians must have realistic discussions on territorial issues,” Macron said, addressing French ambassadors gathered at the Elysee Palace. He added that “only Ukrainians themselves can conduct such negotiations.”
Macron also noted that “there will be no quick and easy solution in Ukraine.”
At the same time, he emphasized that the USA, in particular President-elect Donald Trump, should help the Europeans convince Russia to sit down at the negotiating table.
“The United States of America must help us change the nature of the situation and convince Russia to come to the negotiating table,” Macron said.
“The new American president himself knows that the United States has no chance of winning anything if Ukraine loses,” he added.
The French leader also noted that Europe will have to offer security guarantees to Ukraine.
He also warned that trust in Western countries would “shake” if they agreed to compromise on Ukraine due to “fatigue”.
“The capitulation of Ukraine cannot be useful for Europeans and Americans,” said the French president.
US President-elect Donald Trump, whose inauguration is scheduled for January 20, has repeatedly stated that he wants to end Russia’s war against Ukraine as soon as possible.
Previously, analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
Kyiv has repeatedly stated that it cannot agree to any territorial concessions by Russia or freezing of the conflict. Such a freeze, according to the Ukrainian authorities, will only help Russia better prepare for a new attack on Ukraine.
In an interview with the American podcaster Lex Friedman published on January 5, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that the first negotiations on the end of the war will be with the newly elected US President Donald Trump.
“I think on January 25 or another day we will sit down with Trump first of all. We agree on how we can stop the war and (President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin – ed.) Putin,” he said.
The president emphasized: “if Trump offers strong security guarantees for Ukraine, then after that there can be a conversation with the Russians.” “And only like that, not just the three of them sat down at once,” he added.
