On Friday, January 3, in the Donetsk region, the forces of the Russian Federation probably shot Ukrainian soldiers, reported the Ombudsman of Ukraine Dmytro Lubinets.

According to the ombudsman, “the incident took place near the village of Neskuchne in the Volnova district of the Donetsk region.” According to preliminary data, says Lubinets, “the Russian occupiers shot three Ukrainian prisoners of war. They tied their hands and shot them in the back of the head.”

Lubinets reminded that “according to the Geneva Conventions, prisoners of war are under special protection, and no country has the right to torture, abuse or deprive them of their lives. Despite this, Russia shows disregard for international norms.”

“I, as the representative of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on human rights, once again immediately appeal to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations. These organizations should condemn this crime and put pressure on the Russian side to stop such acts,” wrote Lubinets.

Reports of murders, torture and ill-treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war are regularly reported. In general, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have information about the murder of at least 93 Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian soldiers, reported on October 4, the representative of the OGP, Yuriy Belousov.

According to him, 80% of cases of executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war were recorded in 2024, but the trend began to appear in November 2023, when “changes took place in the attitude of Russian servicemen towards our prisoners of war for the worse.”

The US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says it has observed an increase in the number of executions by the Russian military of Ukrainian prisoners of war, and points out that Russian commanders are likely “tolerating, encouraging or directly ordering” the executions.
