Lithuania supports France’s idea of possibly sending Western troops to Ukraine. In the event that Paris decides to do this, it does not need NATO’s permission, Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Davidas Matulonis said in a comment to Radio Svoboda, reports UNN.

“These can be national decisions, a group of countries, a coalition that wants to join this initiative. It is not necessary to have NATO’s approval or label,” the ambassador said.

However, as Matulonis noted, currently sending troops to Ukraine is “just an idea” and different countries have different positions on it.

“This is a consistent French position. We have always had a positive attitude towards this,” the ambassador emphasized.

Matoulonis believes that such a discussion can be raised by the NATO foreign ministers at the meeting next week: “First of all, the process of training the troops depends on them, and perhaps some countries will join sooner or later.”

The issue of sending foreign troops to Ukraine continues to cause discussion at the international level. For example, the newspaper Le Monde reported that after the visit of the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Keir Starmer, to France, both countries returned to the mentioned topic. But British Foreign Secretary David Lammy rejected the idea. At the same time, the topic periodically appears in political discussions, especially in the context of a possible threat to the security of NATO countries.

Political scientist Taras Semenyuk comments UNN explained the political and legal aspects of such a decision, as well as how it could affect the balance of power at the front.
