The Kyiv metro additionally purchases thousands of folding chairs for underground stations, which work as shelters during shelling. The previous chairs, handed over in 2023, broke or were not returned, so the need remained great, writes the press service of the Kyiv Metro.

KP “Kyiv Metropoliten” plans to purchase 4,460 new folding chairs for its underground stations. They work around the clock as a shelter for people during air raids. In 2023, the International Organization for Migration handed over 10,000 chairs to the capital metro. They were distributed among 46 underground stations so that each shelter was ready to receive people.

However, over time, most of these chairs broke or were not returned to the subway. Currently, there are about 2,400 units left, which is much less than the need, the KP notes. “We are buying new chairs so that anyone who goes underground during an emergency has a place to sit. This is a matter of safety and comfort of our passengers,” the press service of the metro said.

Thanks to this step, underground stations will become more convenient for people hiding during shelling and will allow maintaining order at critical moments.
