Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko appealed to the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Law Enforcement Activities with a proposal to impose lifelong imprisonment for the murder of children.
Currently, such crimes can be guilty of a maximum of 15 years in prison, with the possibility of early release. Kravchenko stressed that such punishment is unfair.
“Can any sentence be fair when they have taken away the life of a child, her right to grow and achieve something in life? The country has lost part of its future. And the offender, having served a certain period, can return to a normal life. Therefore, I suggest that the sentence for such crimes is as fair as possible – an alternative life imprisonment, ”he explained.
Over the past 19 months, 67 children have been victims of premeditated murders, and 531 children have been injured in sexual abuse, 360 of them under 14 years of age. Kravchenko called on the People’s Deputies to support the initiative of the Prosecutor General’s office and to make appropriate changes to the legislation so that the killers and rapists could no longer count on indulgences.
