Kallas doubted that the regime in Iran could fall due to protests

The head of European diplomacy, Kaya Callas, said at a press conference with the German defense minister in Berlin that she does not know whether the regime in Iran will fall as a result of mass protests, and called for continued support for civil society.

Direct speech: “No one knows what the coming days and weeks will bring. It may be that the Assad regime has fallen, which has come as a surprise to everyone. Very often these regimes are very, very resilient. . . . We continue to support civil society, and we are also introducing more sanctions against those who use violence against peaceful protesters to show that we condemn these actions.”

Details: The diplomat reiterated that the brutal crackdown on protests in Iran is “unacceptable” and the EU is working on additional sanctions against those responsible for human rights abuses.

Kallas also added that even if the Ayatollah’s regime falls, Iran will need an alternative form of government, so the EU will continue to support civil society in the country.

• The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU plans to quickly propose new sanctions in connection with the repression of protesters in Iran.
• Meanwhile, the US president supported the Iranian population in the protests and said that “help is on the way.”
• US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said earlier that the United States was not planning a military attack against Iran, but acknowledged that those plans could change because the president’s patience is not limited.
