Journalists published a complete list of the dead and missing on the Moscow cruiser. Among them, 14 are residents of Crimea

Journalists from Mediazon and the Russian BBC service, together with a team of volunteers, established the names and surnames of 20 dead sailors and eight more missing as a result of the Ukrainian attack on the Russian missile cruiser “Moskva”.

Earlier in January, the Second Western District Military Court disclosed the data on the losses on the cruiser, admitting that it sank after a Ukrainian missile strike. The commander of the 406th Artillery Brigade of the Navy of Ukraine, Andriy Shubin, was found guilty of destroying the cruiser and was sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia. Soon this publication disappeared from the court’s website.

“Mediazona” published the first complete list of sailors who died on the cruiser “Moskva”. According to the official registers of the Russian Federation, eight people from this list have not yet been formally declared dead.

According to the publication, at least 20 of the dead were conscripts. Most of the dead, 14 people, lived in the occupied Crimea or Sevastopol, three more were conscripted from the Far East of Russia. Exactly how many Crimeans lived on the peninsula before its occupation in 2014 is not specified in the message.

The Russian authorities and the Ministry of Defense have not yet made public the list of those killed on the cruiser.

The armed forces of Ukraine attacked the cruiser “Moskva” on April 13, 2022. The Russian Ministry of Defense said that there was a fire on board, which caused the detonation of ammunition and flooding. Ukraine claimed that the cruiser was hit by two Neptune missiles. The cruiser sank on April 14.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation initially reported that one person had died, and 27 sailors were missing. A Meduza source close to the command of the Black Sea Fleet said that 37 people had died. In November 2022, a court in Sevastopol recognized 17 sailors as dead. In January 2023, the Russian service of the BBC and Mediazon reported that they had established the names of 22 dead crew members.

On the second anniversary of the death of the cruiser “Moscow”, a monument to the dead crew was opened in Sevastopol. It shows the names, surnames, dates of life and ranks of 21 sailors. In 19 of them, the date of death is April 13, 2022.
