“There is a small population there, and I think that diplomatic channels are the right way. And I think that the appointment of a special envoy by the president reflects that,” he said in an interview with the BBC.
Johnson believes that the world is listening to Trump’s words about a possible military solution to the issue. He recalled that Great Britain and some other US allies had sent their forces to Greenland:
“Maybe that was the point. Maybe all of our friends and allies around the world have reawakened the importance of this geography and this location. And hopefully we can work on it together.”
Asked by a reporter if that was Trump’s plan from the beginning, Johnson said he didn’t know. According to him, the US president is “playing chess”.
“I don’t know. I haven’t discussed this particular issue with him. I talk to him really often, sometimes several times a day. But we have a lot going on right now. So this is just a small part of the bigger picture,” stated the speaker of the US House of Representatives.
Trump and GreenlandUS President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken about his intention to acquire Greenland. In recent weeks, his statements have gained momentum – he does not rule out, in particular, the use of military force.
According to Trump, Greenland should be under the control of Washington. Otherwise, as he claims, the island will be seized by Russia or China.
After a number of European countries opposed the US annexation of Greenland, Washington imposed additional tariffs on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
In Europe, they said that they would prepare a coordinated response to this decision.
