It was on this day in 1918 that a legendary battle took place between the 4,000th Bolshevik army and a small detachment of students and volunteers who stood up for Kiev.
Despite the inequality of forces, Ukrainian defenders have shown incredible courage, defending Ukraine’s right to be an independent state.
The battle lasted near the Kruty railway station, not far from Kiev. The defenders detained the enemy, destroyed the infrastructure and gave the UNR government time to sign the Brest Peace Treaty, which enshrined the international recognition of Ukraine.

However, this feat has become the cost of young lives: more than 300 Ukrainians were killed, and 27 students were captured and shot. They were buried on the Askold Tomb, paid tribute to real heroes.
This tragic story page has long been silenced, but today it has taken an honorable place in the pantheon of national memory.
Since 2003, Kruty Heroes Day has been officially honored at the state level.
The Kruty battle is not only an example of heroism, but also a symbol of our struggle for freedom. The memory of them reminds that every generation is responsible for preserving statehood and independence.
