Duda recalled that Russia has so far attacked the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the remains of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, but “fortunately, a nuclear disaster did not occur.”
“This danger of an attack on the rest of the power plants – be it Rivne or Khmelnytsky – exists, and it must be reckoned with. If there are attacks, it will be necessary to immediately intervene in this case, to call experts… “, he noted.
The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said at the UN Security Council meeting that Russia wants to attack Ukrainian nuclear power plants and Kyiv has proof.
Earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiga, referring to Ukrainian intelligence, said that the Russian Federation was preparing strikes on critical nuclear energy facilities of Ukraine on the eve of winter. In particular, according to him, we are talking about open distribution devices of nuclear plants and transmission substations, which are critical for the safe operation of nuclear energy.
There are three nuclear power plants operating in Ukraine: Rivne Nuclear Power Plant (4 power units), South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant (3 power units) and Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant (2 power units). The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has been occupied by the Russian military since 2022.
The territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP is periodically shelled, for which Ukraine and Russia blame each other. The Ukrainian authorities also stated that the Russian army used the nuclear power plant to store military equipment and deploy its servicemen.
