Diplomat, ex-ambassador of Ukraine to Poland Andrii Deshchytsia answered on Radio NV whether the detention of boxer Oleksandr Usyk at Krakow airport is related to the worsening of relations between Warsaw and Kyiv.
“No, I think it’s a coincidence. And it should not be used to emphasize the relations that exist between Ukraine and Poland,” Deshchytsia noted.
He recalled that Usyk called the incident “misunderstanding”:
“He was detained, everything became clear quickly. And I believe that the president, the minister of foreign affairs, and the consul general who arrived at the scene are protecting the interests of Ukrainian citizens and doing the right thing. If there is any misunderstanding, it should be resolved as soon as possible.”
“Then Usyk held out his hands.” The promoter spoke in detail about the boxer’s detention at the Polish airport
Detention of Oleksandr Usyk and his coach Serhii Lapin at Krakow airport
On the evening of September 17, world heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk was detained at Krakow airport.
He and his coach, Serhii Lapin, were denied boarding after an airline representative decided they were “unfit for travel”
Usyk tried to explain that everything is fine with them and they are simply exhausted after the almost 14-hour journey from Kyiv. However, due to the language barrier and the fact that the boxer categorically claimed that they had not violated anything, he was detained.
At that time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiga said that he considers the measures taken against Usyk “disproportionate and unacceptable” and intends to send a corresponding note to the Polish side.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also reacted to the incident
Later, Usyk was released, the athlete himself explained that there was a misunderstanding and that everything is fine with him.
