Mount played his part in giving the Red Devils a 1-0 lead thanks to Patrick Dorgu’s superb strike, but he did not return to the field after the break. Junior Jack Fletcher took his place.
With the Reds already missing several key players for the Boxing Day match, it was decided not to take any chances, even if the player himself wanted to play on.
Coach of Manchester United Ruben Amorim said: “He felt something during the break. He wanted to continue, and that’s fine too. He wanted to come off in the second half, but we can’t lose more players if you’re not 100 percent. And Jack did a very good job.”
Casemiro returned from suspension, but Bruno Fernandes and Kobbi Mein were injured, as were defenders Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt.
Nussair Mazraoui, who played in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Mali, is at the Africa Cup of Nations, as are Amad Diallo and Brian Mbemo.
Manchester United’s next match will take place on December 30, when Wolverhampton will visit the Theater of Dreams. Then there’s a trip to Leeds at the weekend, followed by another away game against Burnley at Turf Moor.
