Literally: “Russian forces have begun intensifying offensive operations east of Pokrovsk, and geolocation video footage released on January 1 suggests that they recently captured Vozdvizhenka (east of Pokrovsk). Video released on January 5 indicates that Russian forces may also have captured Svyridonivka and Timofiivka (both east of Pokrovsk) during the last days, and also advanced to the southeast Elizavetivka (south of Pokrovsk) during a mechanized attack.”

Details: In its report, ISW notes that Russian “militants” claim to have entrenched Russian sabotage and reconnaissance units north of Timofiivka and along the T-0504 Pokrovsk-Kostiantynivka route. They also state that Russian troops have advanced north of Vozdvizhenka in the direction of Baranivka, Vodyanyi Drugo and Zeleni Pol. However, ISW does not confirm these claims.

Key findings:

  • Ukrainian troops resumed offensive operations in at least three areas within the Ukrainian salient in the Kursk region and achieved a tactical advance on January 5.
  • On January 5, Russian troops advanced southeast of Suja and counterattacked against intensified Ukrainian attacks southeast of Korenevo and north of Suja.
  • Russian sources have expressed concern about the Russian military’s ability to counter Ukraine’s efforts to integrate electronic warfare (EW) and long-range strikes with ground operations.
  • Russian troops advanced east of Pokrovsk amid renewed offensive operations in the area, likely aimed at supporting the encirclement of Pokrovsk from the northeast.
  • Recent intensification in the area of responsibility of the Russian 41st Army east of Pokrovsk indicates that the Russian military command still considers the encirclement of Pokrovsk as one of the key operational objectives in the area.
  • Russian forces can also exploit the relatively weaker Ukrainian defensive positions east and south of Pokrovsk in a sustained effort to capture any territory, regardless of its relative tactical importance.
  • According to reports, units of the Russian 5th separate motorized rifle brigade (51st AK, former 1st Army Corps of the DPR) are distributed between the Pokrovsky and Kurakhiv directions – two of the most priority areas of the front for Russia.
  • Russian troops advanced near Borova, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, and Kurakhovo.
  • Ukrainian troops advanced on the Kursk arc and recovered lost positions near the settlement of Chasiv Yar.
