Details: South Korea’s National Intelligence Service reported on November 13 that the North Korean military had engaged in combat operations on Russian territory, following their training and gradual deployment to the battlefield over the past two weeks. Confirmation of this fact also came from American intelligence.

Literally: “U.S. State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said during a briefing on November 12 that more than 10,000 North Korean troops are stationed in eastern Russia, and most of them have moved to the Kursk region, where they are participating in hostilities alongside Russian forces.”

Key findings:

  • The Kremlin is trying to dictate the terms of any potential “peace” talks with Ukraine on the eve of the inauguration of the newly elected US President Donald Trump. The way in which the Kremlin is trying to set its terms for negotiations strongly suggests that Russia’s goals remain the same and still boil down to the complete surrender of Ukraine. The Kremlin appears unwilling to make more concessions to the new Trump administration than it did to the current administration.
  • Lavrov’s pre-emptive rejection of a potential proposal to freeze the current frontline shows once again that Russia is not interested in softening its approach or demands at the talks and maintains its goal of the full surrender of Ukraine, which Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly outlined in June 2024 .
  • As reported, on November 13, Ukrainian special services killed an officer of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in occupied Crimea.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin and top Russian oil executives have reportedly rejected a proposed merger of Russia’s three largest oil companies. Conflicting reports about a proposed merger of Russian oil companies point to a possible struggle between groups close to Putin and the heads of Russian energy corporations.
  • South Korean and US intelligence agencies independently confirmed that North Korean troops entered the battle alongside Russian troops in the Kursk region.
  • Russian troops have recently advanced near Toretsk, Kurakhovo, Vugledar, and on the border of Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions, while Ukrainian troops have recently regained positions near Chasovoy Yar.
  • Russian forces continue to rely on reconditioned tanks and armored vehicles removed from depots to replace combat losses, but will likely not be able to sustain these losses in the long term.
