Somaliland, a Sunni Muslim region, lasted five days as an independent state in 1960, during which it was recognized by Israel and 34 other countries, before it merged with Somalia.
Somaliland seceded in 1991, and although no other country has recognized it, several influential powers—the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, Turkey, the UAE, Denmark, Kenya, and Taiwan—retain representations.
Netanyahu invited Abdullahi for an official visit to Israel and said he would inform US President Donald Trump about Somaliland’s desire to join the Abrahamic Accords.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Israel said that embassies will be opened and ambassadors will be appointed in both countries.
The foreign ministers of Somalia, Egypt, Turkey and Djibouti have reportedly condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
We will remind: The move follows reports in August that Somaliland was among several countries in talks with Israel over the possible resettlement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
