Details: Khamenei said the protests had led to the deaths of “several thousand” people, the first statement by an Iranian leader about the scale of casualties in the wave of protests that began on December 28 and were brutally suppressed.

The Iranian leader emphasized that during the uprising, US President Donald Trump personally called on the rebels to continue the protests and promised them support. He repeated the accusation that the US seeks to dominate Iran’s economic and political resources.

“We consider the US president a criminal because of the victims and damages, because of the accusations against the Iranian people,” he said.

Khamenei called the protesters US “foot soldiers” and said they had destroyed mosques and educational centers. “By harming people, they killed several thousand of them,” he said.

According to the American news agency Human Rights Activists News Agency, as a result of the suppression of protests in Iran, at least 3,095 people have died, more than the number of victims of any other protest or unrest in Iran in recent decades.

What preceded: January 16 White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said that in Iran, where large-scale anti-government protests continue, 800 executions have been halted amid warnings from the regime by US President Donald Trump about the consequences.

The US president said he had been assured that in protest-ridden Iran executions and murders allegedly stopped.

January 17 Trump denied media reports that Arab countries had persuaded him to abandon military intervention in protest-ridden Iran.
