Renato Polimanti, associate professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and senior author of the study, emphasized that the obtained data demonstrate how many genes affecting different brain functions determine the individual risk of developing anxiety. The study also opens up opportunities for further study of the molecular basis of psychopathology, as well as the mechanisms underlying the connection between anxiety and other diseases.

Scientists were able to see how genes affect brain structures that increase the risk of developing anxiety disorders. They also found that some genes associated with anxiety can lead to other mental illnesses, such as depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This highlights the complexity of mental illnesses and their shared genetic roots.

In addition, research has shown links between genetic risk for anxiety and physical conditions, including gastrointestinal disorders and chronic pain. These results confirm that anxiety disorders can be associated not only with mental, but also with physical problems.

Dr. Eleni Friligkou, a psychiatry resident and first author of the study, said that studying the genetic data of different ethnic groups provided a better understanding of ancestry-specific genetic correlates of anxiety disorders. This highlights the importance of increasing diversity in genetic research to better understand the nature of anxiety and develop personalized treatments.
