The fatal accident happened in Warsaw last Friday, January 3, around 5:00 p.m. A minibus driver hit a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing. After the collision, he did not stop and drove away from the scene of the accident, reports a correspondent of Radio Svoboda.

A passer-by – a military man – was the first to help the boy.

The victim was taken to the hospital, but as a result of serious head and chest injuries, the boy died in the hospital.

Today, January 6, the District Prosecutor’s Office of Warsaw reported that the dead boy is a 14-year-old Ukrainian.

“The victim is a citizen of Ukraine. The perpetrator is a citizen of Poland. After the crime, the suspect hid the minibus on the outskirts of Warsaw. There he consumed alcohol with one of his family members,” said Piotr Skiba, the spokesman of the district prosecutor’s office in Warsaw, during a press conference.

When asked by a Radio Liberty correspondent whether the dead boy was a war refugee, Piotr Skiba said that “it will become known tomorrow, after the law enforcement officers talk to the mother of the accident victim.”

The 43-year-old driver was detained for drunk driving on Saturday, January 4, after the accident. It is known that Andrzej K. is an employee of a courier service. According to the prosecutor’s office, “he already had convictions, in particular, for possession of drugs, as well as for helping foreigners to cross the border illegally.”

Also, the spokesman of the prosecutor’s office said that “the prosecutor will send a request to the court to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention.”

The driver is charged with two counts – committing a traffic accident with fatal consequences and fleeing the scene of the incident, which is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 5 to 20 years.
