Eco-inspectors recorded 142 violations in the field of illegal felling and sale of Christmas trees, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine reports.

“This year, the State Inspection found 142 violations. Among them: 24 cases of arbitrary felling, 11 — violations of the procurement procedure, 107 — in places of sale. As a result of the inspections, 137 protocols were drawn up, of which 97 were submitted to the court. 40 people have been brought to administrative responsibility,” says the message published in the Telegram channel of the Ministry of the Environment.

The Ministry reminds that Christmas trees should be bought at specialized points of sale, the addresses of which are available on the Facebook page and on the website of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”.

Sellers who transport and sell Christmas trees are required to have the necessary documentation, in particular: a forestry invoice, a consignment note, a tree radiation inspection certificate and a trade permit with a wet seal. Each Christmas tree must be equipped with a special tag with a bar code that contains information about the place of harvesting, the logger and his subordination.

Illegal felling of coniferous trees is punishable by a fine in the amount of 510 to 5,100 hryvnias in accordance with Article 65 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses.

In addition, cutting down trees in forests is punishable under Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (“Illegal felling or illegal transportation, storage, sale of forest”), which provides for a fine of 17,000 to 25,500 hryvnias or arrest for up to six months.

Meanwhile, the SBI has exposed a group in the Chernivtsi region that organized illegal logging for almost 3.7 million hryvnias.

In addition, the SBU blocked large-scale deforestation in Transcarpathia.
