In Ukraine, law enforcement officers are warning about a new wave of telephone fraud, which most often targets the elderly.
This was reported in the Main Department of the National Police of Zakarpattia Oblast.
Criminals call victims and pretend to be representatives of “law enforcement”.
Then they move on to psychological pressure in order to force the person to give the money as soon as possible. The Zakarpattia Oblast police reported the dangerous scheme.
Fraudsters say that the interlocutor allegedly “financed Russia” without even suspecting it.
The explanation sounds convincing only at first glance – they say, a person once bought medicines or bio-supplements on the Internet, which were supposedly manufactured on the territory of the Russian Federation.
And the money for this purchase, according to the swindlers, allegedly went to Russian accounts. After that, there are loud accusations and intimidation of responsibility.
The key stage of the scam is the “way out of the situation”, which the criminals offer immediately during the conversation.
A person is threatened with criminal prosecution and even charged with “treason”, and then demanded to hand over “all available money” supposedly to verify its origin.
The funds are requested either to be transferred to bank accounts, or to be given in cash to the courier. It is the rush and the demand for urgent action that is a marker that they are trying to deceive you.
We will remind you that the fraudsters made another mailing of fake letters allegedly from the tax office.
Fraudsters also spread a fake “statement to verify the age” of pensioners.
