In Ukraine, during large-scale inspections of universities and colleges, about 50,000 students over the age of 25 were expelled.

This was reported by the head of the State Education Quality Service, Ruslan Gurak, in an interview with Zn.ua.

Gurak noted that after the start of the full-scale war, the number of students aged 25+ increased dramatically. If by 2022 there were about 30,000 of them, then in the last three years their number has increased to about 230,000.

According to him, “and during 2022-2025, this indicator is kept at the same level with minor fluctuations.” The analysis, conducted by the State Service for the Quality of Education, covered all levels – from professional pre-university education to postgraduate education – and confirmed that the sharp increase occurred precisely after February 2022.

The service assumes that some of the new students are trying to avoid mobilization. “Three things are important for those who enter to avoid the draft: that it is easy to enter and study, and all this is inexpensive,” Hurak notes.

He emphasizes that medical and legal specialties are not in demand among such entrants: “First of all, to enter these areas, you need to have at least 150 NMT points. Secondly, tuition fees are very high. And it’s not easy to study there.”

As a result of the audits, the State Service for the Quality of Education excluded about 50,000 students aged 25+ who entered in violation of the law. According to Gurak, this number is not final.

Law enforcement officers have already opened eight criminal proceedings against officials of educational institutions, and also detained deans and rectors of certain universities. The DSYAO submitted to the Ministry of Education reports on the cancellation of the licenses of two institutions. The Ministry of Education and Culture is currently preparing about 20 inspections regarding detected violations.

Despite large-scale deductions, the general situation in the system has not changed: “more than 200,000 students over the age of 25 still remain in the education system. And with each introductory campaign, their ranks are replenished,” Gurak concluded
