According to local media, there were about 500 passengers in the two trains at the time of the collision. The impact was so strong that at least one passenger car rolled down a four-meter slope.
Córdoba fire chief Francisco Carmona told Spanish national radio station RNE that one of the trains was badly damaged and at least four cars were completely derailed.
Andalusian Health Minister Antonio Sanz confirmed the death toll of more than 20 people and warned that the death toll could rise as the rescue operation continued.
To eliminate the consequences of the accident, the military and other rescue services were involved. Support to medical workers on site is provided by representatives of the Red Cross.
Sans specified that 73 injured passengers were taken to six different medical facilities in the region. Maria Belen Moya Rojas, head of the regional civil protection service, said on Canal Sur that the accident happened in a difficult-to-reach area, which makes it difficult for emergency services to work.
Sans’ direct speech: “The situation at the crash site is very serious. We are in for a very difficult night.”
Details: In connection with the disaster, the operator Adif announced that there will be no rail service between Madrid and Andalusian cities on Monday.
