The Spanish government announced a three-day mourning period for those who died due to flooding in the Valencia region, at least 72 people are currently known to have died. This was reported by The Guardian on Wednesday, October 30.
As the publication notes, the Spanish Ministry of Defense involved aviation, military psychologists and specially trained dogs to save people. The government has also provided mobile morgues amid concerns about the situation of victims once the dirt begins to be cleared.
Dozens of people in Spain were stuck on trucks, on the roofs of shops and gas stations, or locked in their cars until they were rescued.
Thhe Guardian adds that several people are missing. Rescue operations in the country continue in the south and east, but rescuers are hampered by broken power lines, as well as destroyed telephone networks, and it is difficult to move on roads that remain impassable.
The country’s defense minister, Margarita Robles, said more than 1,000 troops with helicopters had been deployed through “an unprecedented phenomenon”.
The newspaper El Pais noted that the heavy rains led to power outages for approximately 155,000 people and blocked roads in several provinces. Also, high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and the Valencian Community, as well as the Mediterranean corridor to Barcelona, was suspended during the day.
It was previously reported that the intense rain in Spain belongs to a phenomenon known as gota fría, or cold drop. Such rains occur when cold air moves over the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea and leads to the formation of cumulus clouds.
Scientists suggest that extreme weather events are becoming more intense due to climate change.
